Ex-Burt Bacharach Corvette Convertible
This 1966 Chevrolet Corvette convertible was purchased by musician and composer Burt Bacharach in 2000 as a black-over-black example with a 350ci V8. The car was registered in the name of his wife, Jane, and the selling dealer tells us that it was refinished in blue under their ownership. The current owner acquired it in 2013, and subsequent work involved installing a 427ci V8 and a six-speed manual transmission as well as refinishing the body again and reupholstering the interior. Additional equipment includes a Hurst short-throw shifter, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, 15″ Rally wheels, a Holley four-barrel carburetor, aluminum cylinder heads, Hooker long-tube headers, Magnaflow mufflers, a black convertible soft top, power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. The tires, water pump, and brake master cylinder were replaced in preparation for the sale. This C2 is now offered on dealer consignment with service records and a clean California title.
The fiberglass body was finished from the factory in Tuxedo Black (AA), and it was refinished in blue in the 2000's and refinished again in 2014. Exterior equipment includes a replacement black convertible soft top, flip-up headlights, chrome bumpers, fender vents, a driver-side mirror, and a retractable antenna. Paint blemishes from the soft top are shown in the gallery.
The 15″ Rally wheels were mounted with 215/70 Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires in preparation for the sale. The C2 was the first Corvette to offer fully independent suspension, with upper and lower control arms at the front and a three-link setup with a transverse leaf spring at the rear. Rack-and-pinion power steering was added in 2013. Braking is handled by power-assisted four-wheel discs, and a dual-master cylinder was fitted in preparation for the sale. The seller tells us that the seats were reupholstered in black leather in 2014, and that the dash and clock were refurbished while the door cards and carpeting were replaced. Equipment includes a Hurst short-throw shifter, an AM/FM radio, an analog clock, and lap belts.
A wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level, amperage, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 57k miles. Total mileage is unknown. The 427ci V8 was installed in 2014, and it is equipped with a Holley 770-cfm four-barrel with electric choke, aluminum cylinder heads, Billet Specialties aluminum valve covers, Hooker long-tube headers, a Milodon oil pan, an aluminum radiator, a Summit HEI distributor, an electric fuel pump, and a replacement fuel tank. An Optima red top battery. The water pump was replaced in preparation for the sale. A Tremec six-speed manual transmission was installed in 2014. Additional work involved installing an SFI-spec 6.1 bellhousing, replacing the clutch, and rebuilding the rear end. Magnaflow mufflers are fitted.
